Owens' 24 Leads Wesley to Victory
DOVER, Del. - Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) made 10-of-14 field goals on her way to a game-high 24 points as Wesley College defeated Mount Saint Vincent on the first day of the Wesley College Classic.
The sophomore also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year and blocked three shots as well.
The Dolphins (4-6) built an early 17-10 lead after a field goal by Joelle Denotaris with 11:14 to go in the half. The Wolverines (3-5) reeled off nine straight points, however, to take a three point lead, 20-17, after an Owens free throw with 7:25 remaining.
Over the next five minutes, there were four lead changes and three ties until Wesley closed the half with a 12-0 run fueled by five of Colleen Thomas' (Howell, N.J./Howell) 17 points as the Wolverines claimed a 36-27 halftime lead.
Two free throws by Mount Saint Vincent's Courtney Heeseman cut the lead to five, 38-33, just 1:23 into the second half. A three by Thomas and three straight fast break baskets by Owens sparked a 15-4 run that put the Wolverines up 53-37 with 14:47 to go.
The Dolphins were not done, however. Jen Mocanu hit a jumper on Mount Saint Vincent's next possession that started a 16-2 run that shaved the Wolverines' lead to just a bucket at 55-53 with 8:29 to play after a Mocanu three.
Wesley clung to a narrow lead until Lauren Percodani drained a three for a 60-58 Dolphin lead with 4:26 to go. That lead did not last long, though, as Thomas hit another three to put the Wolverines back ahead 15 seconds later. The triple started an 11-0 game breaking run capped by a Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) with 2:00 minutes to play that left Wesley ahead 69-60.
All five of Thomas' field goals in the game came from beyond the arc and the junior fell just one rebound short of a double-double. Boyd had her second straight 10 assist game of the season and also had three steals and a pair of blocks.
Heesemann and Mocanu did all they could to keep the Dolphins in the game. Both players turned in double-doubles, led by Heesemann with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Mocanu overcame a 5-of-19 shooting effort to score 12 points and led the team with 11 rebounds.
The Dolphins will face undefeated Greensboro (N.C.) on the second day of the classic. Play concludes on December 30 with a game between the Pride and the Wolverines.
