Wesley Outlasts Greensboro to Win Classic
DOVER, Del. - Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) grabbed 22 rebounds and blocked seven shots as Wesley College knocked off an undefeated Greensboro College team 65-60 in the Wesley College Classic.
Owens, who added 10 points for her third straight double-double, powered a Wesley team that outrebounded the Pride for the first time in 2008-09. The Wolverines snagged a season-high 52 rebounds in the game.
A 13-3 run late in the game that sealed the win for the Wolverines. A put back by the Pride's Kim Enoch had given Greensboro a 52-48 advantage with 5:50 to go, but consecutive threes by Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) erased the deficit. After a three by Nikki Wilborn briefly put Greensboro ahead 55-54, the Wolveries reeled off seven straight points to claim a 61-55 lead after an Owens jumper with just 33 seconds to go.
Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, but Wesley (4-5) regrouped to hit 47 percent in the second half. The Wolverines kept up the defense, however, holding Greensboro (5-1) to just 29 percent in the game. Wesley blocked 11 shots as a team, including three by Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) in addition to Owens' seven.
Michele Mules (York, Pa./Susquehannock) scored a team-high 15 points to lead Wesley in the game. Thomas scored 13, 11 of which came in the second half. Boyd, who also had eight assists, gave the Wolverines four players in double figures with 10 points.
Dione Eccles hit five threes on her way to a game-high 19 in the losing effort. Kim Enoch had 14 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Wilborn turned in 10 points and four steals.
The Wolverines are now idle until January 8, when they travel to Capital Athletic Conference foe Stevenson for a 6:00 PM tip off.
