Buzzer Beater Beats Wesley

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury's Janay Johnson scored at the buzzer as Wesley College fell 61-59 at Salisbury in Capital Athletic Conference play.  The dramatic ending overshadowed a career-high 27 by the Wolverines' Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant).

Wesley (12-9, 8-4 CAC) trailed by 34-25 at the half, but opened the second half with a 9-0 run that featured six of Colleen Thomas' (Howell, N.J./Howell) seven points on the day to tie the game.  The Wolverines would not take a lead, however, until a lay up by Boyd with 10:43 to play made it 45-44.

The Sea Gulls (6-15, 6-6 CAC) regrouped and led by three, 59-56, with just 58 seconds left after a bucket by Johnson.  Thomas was fouled with 39 seconds left and made the first free throw.  Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) grabbed the offensive board off the miss of the second foul shot, and the Wolverines called a timeout.

Wesley would miss a three on the ensuing possession, but Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) got the rebound and the put back to tie the game at 59-59 with just 10 ticks left.  Salisbury called timeout with just four seconds left and when play resumed, Kylie Hall fed Johnson for the game-winner as time expired.

Boyd, who played all 40 minutes in the game, scored 17 of her 27 in the second half and finished the day 9-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-6 from three.  Owens added 12 points and eight rebounds in the game on 5-of-9 shooting, but the rest of the team shot just 7-of-33 in the game.

Glenn Charlton hit 10-of-12 field goals to lead the Sea Gulls with 22 points.  Hall turned in a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Johnson added 13 points in the contest.

Wesley forced Salisbury into 26 turnovers, including 15 in a second half where the Sea Gulls managed to attempt just 18 shots.  Salisbury hit 10 of those field goals, however, and shot 50 percent as a team.

It was the second straight loss for Wesley and the first time the team dropped consecutive games in nearly two months.

The Wolverines will look to rebound with a trip to Hood on Wednesday, February 11 at 6:00 PM.
