Wesley Falls at Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Wesley College received 22 points and 11 rebounds from sophomore center Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford), but it was not enough as Mary Washington won a defensive struggle 57-52.
Just as in the first battle, won 52-48 by the Wolverines in Dover, neither team cracked 40 percent from the floor. Owens hit 10-of-16 from the floor, but the rest of the Wesley (13-11, 9-6 CAC) squad combined to make just nine field goals in the game.
Mary Washington (19-5, 11-4 CAC) led by as many as 10 in the first half after two Jenna McRae free throws gave the Eagles a 23-13 advantage with 4:42 left in the half. Owens, however, scored six points in the final four minutes of the half as Wesley cut it to 25-22 at the break.
The Wolverines tied the game on an Owens jumper with 17:51 to play at 28-28, but back-to-back baskets by Katie Wimmer opened a 14-2 run that made it 42-30 with 11:05 to go in the contest. The Eagles still led by 12 before a lay up by Shavonda Cephas (Milford, Del./Milford), followed by a threes by Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Cephas cut it to 49-45 with 5:18 on the clock. Wimmer stopped the rally with a three just 18 seconds later and the Wolverines could get no closer.
With three assists in the game, Wesley's Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) now has 161 on the season, a new single season record for the Wolverines.
Wimmer led the Eagles with 14 points, while McRae added a dozen. Ashton Mitchell pitched in with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Wesley has locked up the fourth seed for the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Championship Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Salisbury in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, February 24 at 7:00 PM. First, however, the Wolverines wrap up the regular season with a road trip to St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, February 21 at 6:00 PM.
