Wolverines Outshoot Sea Gulls
DOVER, Del. - Wesley College shot 58 percent from the floor as a team as the Wolverines advanced to the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a 71-50 win over Salisbury.
Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) had 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and dished out six assists in the ballgame. Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the year.
The Sea Gulls (9-17) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before Michele Mules (York, Pa./Susquehannock) scored seven of her 13 points on the evening during a 12-0 run that made it 14-6 in favor of the Wolverines (15-11) with 14:03 to play.
A three by Shavonda Cephas (Milford, Del./Milford) gave Wesley a 17-point lead with 1:39 left in the half before Salisbury scored the final six points of the half to go into the locker room trailing 42-31.
In the second half, Owens scored five points in an 11-2 run that swelled the Wolverines' lead to 21, 59-38, with 11:33 left to put the game out of reach. Wesley shot 52 percent in the second half, while holding the Sea Gulls to just 24 percent from the floor.
Owens hit 6-of-7 from the floor and Mules hit 5-of-8. Boyd blocked a pair of shots and added two steals.
Kylie Hall was strong in the losing effort for Salisbury, scoring 18 points and hauling down 12 rebounds. Janay Johnson added a dozen points, but was held to just 6-of-18 shooting. Katharine Curran aslo scored 12 points.
Wesley, seeded fourth in the CAC Tournament, will now travel to the top seed York (Pa.), who is ranked fifth in Division III. The contest is set for a 7:00 PM start on Thursday, February 26.
