Owens Leads Comeback Over Lycoming
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Junior Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half as Wesley College erased a two-point deficit at halftime to defeat Lycoming 75-60 in the Starter's Pub Tip Off Tournament at DeSales University.
Teammate Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) also turned in a big game with 14 assists and 10 points for the double-double to go along with four steals.
After being saddled with foul trouble in the first half, Owens scored 12 points in a 14-0 run to start the second half that gave Wesley (2-0) a 50-38 lead and kept Lycoming (1-1) off the scoreboard for the first 7:41 of the second half. The Wolverines continued to build on their lead for the rest of the half, leading by as much as 17 points after a Boyd free throw with 2:24 left in the game.
In the first half, the Wolverines trailed by as many as nine, 21-12, after a pair of free throws by Kaitlyn Ober with 12:23 to go in the half. Wesley battled back, however, to tie the score at 34-34 after a three by Michele Mules (York, Pa./Susquehannock) and again at 36-36 after a Jasmine Barksdale (Pikesville, Md./Roland Park Country School) lay in with 1:13 to go. A bucket by Ober with just 49 second left in the half gave the Warriors a 38-36 lead at the break.
Owens also had 10 rebounds in the game to notch her second double-double in as many games this season.
Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) shook off a cold shooting night to nearly give the Wolverines three players with double-doubles. The senior finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Barksdale added a dozen points in her first career start.
Three players had double figure rebounds for the Warriors. Ober had 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Alicia Engler and Rebecca Leid had 10 boards apiece. Engler shot just 3-of-13 in the game, but finished with 10 points.
Allison Mock came off the bench to lead the Warriors with 14 points and Jessica Zerbee added 10.
With the win, Wesley will face the hosts from DeSales in the championship game on Sunday, November 22 at 3:00 PM. The Bulldogs edged out Juniata 71-70 in overtime.
