Wesley Goes Cold at DeSales
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - A DeSales team receiving votes in both national polls handed Wesley its first loss of 2009, 67-46 in the championship game of the Starter's Pub Tip Off Tournament.
Wesley led by two, 30-28, at the half, but went ice cold in the second half when the Bulldogs outscored the Wolverines 39-16.
In the first half, Wesley led by as many as seven, 28-21, after a pair of free throws by Katie Kirk (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast), but DeSales chipped away and trailed by just a bucket at the break.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with an 11-1 run, but the deficit was just four for Wesley after two more Kirk free throws that made it 49-45 with 6:30 to go in the game. DeSales, however, closed things out with another run, outscoring Wesley 18-1 down the stretch.
Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) had 15 points, four assists and three steals for the Wolverines. Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) had her third double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 boards and also blocked five shots. Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Jasmine Barksdale (Pikesville, Md./Roland Park Country School) each grabbed eight rebounds.
Lori Lidlow scored a game-high 24 points for DeSales, to go along with eight rebounds. Caitlin Miller had 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Kaila Wiand added 10 points and eight boards.
Owens and Boyd were named to the all-tournament team, as were Lidlow, Miller and Wiand of DeSales and Jen Hnatuck of Juniata. Miller was chosen as the tournament MVP.
The Wolverines are idle until December 2 when they travel to Mary Washington to open Capital Athletic Conference play.
