York (Pa.) Downs Wolverines
YORK, Pa. - Wesley College scored just two points over the final nine minutes as York (Pa.) pulled away for a 69-52 win in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Wesley (2-4, 0-3 CAC) took a 50-44 lead with 9:41 left after a free throw by Lydia Jackson (Galloway, N.J./Absegami). The Spartans (4-4, 1-1 CAC) scored the next 14 points over the next 3:11 to take a 58-44 lead. A layup by Jasmine Barksdale (Pikesville, Md./Roland Park Country School) with 6:25 appeared to stop the run, but York held the Wolverines off the scoreboard for the remainder of the evening while adding 11 points to its lead.
The Spartans led by five at the half and stretched it to seven after a bucket by Loreta Tonuzi with 16:24 to go in the game made it 34-27. Michele Mules (York, Pa./Susquehannock) hit a three on each of the next three possessions to give Wesley a 36-35 lead just over a minute later. The Wolverines kept up the pressure and a layup by Mules with 11:12 to go gave Wesley an eight point lead, 47-39.
A three by Khadija Mitchell cut it to a five point game, but Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) answered to take it back to seven with 10:19 to go. Wesley would hit just one field goal the rest of the way, however, on Barksdale's field goal four minutes later.
Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) had her fifth double-double in five games this season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The junior also added three blocks and three steals.
Mules hit 6-of-10 field goals and 3-of-5 from long distance on her way to a team-high 16 points. Thomas broke out of an early season slump to hit 4-of-8 field goals. She had 10 points in the contest and a career-high seven steals.
Jaimie Sapp came up a rebound short of a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds. Two teammates, however, completed double-doubles as the Spartans outrebounded the Wolverines 47-39. April Sparkman scored 17 points and added 12 boards, while Gayle Exley scored a dozen points and grabbed as many rebounds.
Wesley will look to rebound over the weekend on a trip to Newport News, Virginia. The Wolverines face Christopher Newport on Friday, December 18 and then face the Apprentice School the following day.
Notes:
- Mules topped 500 career points and now has 513 in her career
