Offense Erupts at Gwynedd-Mercy

Angie Owens

Box Score

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - Junior Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) was virtually unstoppable all evening, falling just short of a triple double as Wesley College won for the 10th time in its last 12 games, 90-67 at Gwynned-Mercy.

Owens scored at will, hitting 13-of-16 field goals on her way to a career-high 31 points.  The center added 12 rebounds.  She came up just two blocked shots shy of a triple double and finished with a career-best eight rejections.

It as the first 30-point game for a Wolverine since T'Neisha Turner dropped 41 points against Notre Dame (Md.) in February of 2006.  Even more impressive, it was the most blocked shots for a Wesley player since Chloe Chriss' school-record of 10 during the 1997-98 season.

Owens was not the only Wesley (13-8) player who shot the ball well as the Wolverines connected on 57 percent from the field.

Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) added 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.  She added six rebounds, nine assists and three steals in the contest.

Michele Mules (York, Pa./Susquehannock) hit a career-high five threes in the game to finish with 15 points.

Both Allison Beddia (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle) and Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover) turned in well-rounded performances.  Beddia hit three threes on her way to 11 points and added five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and three steals.  Miller, meanwhile, scored just six points, but chipped in with eight rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.

In the first half, Wesley built a 10-point lead after a Mules three with 6:23 left in the half made it 38-28.  The Griffins (13-6) whittled it all the way to just two points after a Kate Wisniewski layup with 1:02 left before the Wolverines took a 45-41 advantage into the intermission.

Wesley still led just 49-45 before an 18-5 run capped by threes from Shavonda Cephas (Milford, Del./Milford), Beddia and Mules made it 67-50 with 12:25 left in the game.

The Wolverines' season-high point total snapped Gwynedd-Mercy's four-game win streak.

Jackie Dooley led the Griffins with 17 points.  Brittany Neill sank five three pointers on her way to a 16 point effort and Wisniewski netted 11 points.

Wesley hit 13-of-30 threes in the contest (43 percent).

Over the past 48 hours, Owens has now shot 23-of-30 (77 percent) in a pair of Wolverine victories.

Wesley is idle this weekend before heading to St. Mary's (Md.) on February 10 for a 6:00 PM tip off.
