Mayfield Commits to Wesley - Jul 28, 2008

DOVER, Del. - Wesley College women's basetball coach James Wearden has announced that 2008 Lacey Township High School graduate Stephanie Mayfield will continue her academic and athletic careers at Wesley.

Mayfield helped lead Lacey Township to a 21-5 record as a senior in 2007-08, averaging 13.8 points per game for Head Coach Patty Cooke.

A prolific outside shooter, Mayfield set school records for three point field goals in a game (six), season (49) and career (125).  She also set the school record for points in a game with 32 on February 13, 2008 against Raritan.

A three time Times Beacon All-Southern Ocean County First Team pick, she was named to the Newark Star Ledger All-Ocean County First team and the Asbury Park Press and DigitalSports A South Division First Team as a senior.

The daugher of Jeff and Suzette Mayfield, Stephanie had a string of 40 games with at least one three pointer and finished her career third all-time at Lacey Township with 942 points.

Mayfield will look to bolster a Wolverine squad that finished 12-14 overall and 8-8 in the Capital Athletic Conference, a five-win improvement over the previous season.

Wesley to Host Henlopen Conference All-Star Practices - Mar 25, 2008

DOVER, Del. - Bob Lennon, tournament director for the 2008 BlueGold Girls & Boys High School All-Star Basketball Games, has announced that both the boys and the girls "Gold" all-star basketball squads will hold a practice on Thursday, April 3rd, at the Jim & Shirley Wentworth Gymnasium on the campus of Wesley College. The practices, which are scheduled to start at 6PM, are open free to the general public. Youngsters throughout Kent and Sussex counties are encouraged to come out and meet the players and to have their own team jerseys autographed by the all-star players.

Superior Court Judge M. Jane Brady and attorney Keith E. Donovan, a three sport all-state athlete at Cape Henlopen, will be on hand to address and congratulate the all-star players and coaches.

In addition to shoot-around practices, the preliminaries of the boys slam dunk and the girls' 2-ball contest will be held. Those making the cuts will compete three days later in the finals at the BlueGold All-Star Games on Sunday, April 6th, at the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark.

The top senior basketball players from Henlopen Conference schools are selected for all-star play by coaches' votes. As a special added feature at this year's BlueGold Games, the Philadelphia Eagles will play in a benefit game against a corporate sponsor team coached by Judge Brady at 6:30 PM between the girls all-star game (scheduled for a 5:00 tip-off) and the boys all-star game (scheduled for an 8:00 tip-off). Reserved tickets are currently on sale at $10. Tickets can be purchased by calling the BlueGold ticket hotline at 302-765-1222.

Wolverines Fall in CAC Quarterfinals - Feb 26, 2008

YORK, Pa. - Stephanie Bailey came off the bench for a career-high 15 points, but York's Chanel Perez and Kristen Daly combined for 47 points as Wesley College fell 88-53 to the Spartans in the Capital Athletic Conference Quarterfinals in York, Pennsylvania.

All of Bailey's points came on three point field goals.  The freshman hit 5-of-9 from the floor, but the rest of the team struggled mightily with its shot, hitting just 14-of-56 (25 percent).

Wesley also committed just 14 turnovers in the contest, but York (19-7) pounded Wesley (12-14) 59-33 on the glass, including 20 offensive boards.

The Wolverines trailed 47-30 at the half and the Spartans put the game away with a 29-8 run to open the second half.

Cory Boyd also scored in double figures with 12 points and had seven assists in the game.  Angie Owens added 11 rebounds.

Daly hit 11-of-15 field goals on her way to a game-high 26 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds.  Perez finished with 21 points and eight boards.  Keli Ward came up just two points and one assist shy of a triple double with eight points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for York.

York was whistled for just nine fouls in the game, compared to 16 called on the Wolverines.  The Spartans also held a 40-10 advantage on points in the paint.

The loss ends Wesley's season.  With a 12-14 record, the Wolverines won five more games under second-year Head Coach James Wearden.

Women's Hoops fall to St. Mary's - Feb 23, 2008

Collen Thomas scored 27, but the Wesley College Women's Basketball team dropped their second straight Capital Athletic Conference game falling to St. Mary's(MD) 79-71 in front of the home crowd at Wentworth Gymnasium.

The St. Mary's (18-7, 11-6 CAC) Seahawks opened the game with a 10-0 run putting early pressure on the Wolverines.  Wesley's Angie Ownen scored the Wolverines first points of the game at 16:09 on a fastbreak layup.  Owens then helped Wesley (12-13, 8-8 CAC) inch back in the half by scoring 12.

Wesley guard Corey Boyd brought the Wolverines to within one point by hitting a three pointer with 51 second left in the half.

Collen Thomas continued to be a force for the Wolverine scoring 12 in the first half and grabbing four boards.

Down 34-33 coming out of the locker room, Wesley continued to battle in the second half, even tying the score at 44 on a jumper by Thomas at 16:14.

However, the Seahawks continued to run the court with guard Steph Saint-Aubin in control.  After running up 12 points in the first half Saint-Aubin added 15 more in the second.

With the help of fellow Seahawk Tiara Hurte, St. Mary's was able to open up leads as much as 16 on Wesley.  Hurte and Allie Scott both finished with 14 points for the Seahawks.

Wesley's Colleen Thomas matched Saint-Aubin with 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. After scoring 12 in the first half, Owens was only able to add 4 more in the second finishing with 16 on the day. Guard Latasha Torres added 12 and dished out 7 assists.

The Wolverines are the 5th seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament set to start Tuesday, February 26.  Wesley will play at York College, PA who is the 4th seed.  Game time 6:00 p.m.

Playoff Picture Differs for Hoops Teams Entering Final Saturday - Feb 22, 2008

Heading into the final game of the regular season, the playoff picture looks very different for the Wesley men and women's basketball teams.  The Capital Athletic Conference seedings were set after Wednesday's match ups on the women's side, but the men's seedings and the eight teams who get in are up in the air until the action on Saturday.

On the women's side, York (17-7, 9-6) has clinched fourth place and will host Wesley (12-12, 8-7) in the first round.  Although Wesley can tie York for fourth place in the standings, the Spartans swept the season series against the Wolverines to earn the home court advantage in the playoffs.

The Wesley men are certainly in the playoffs, but the Wolverines have the most on the line of any CAC team on Saturday as the Wolverines could finish anywhere from second to fifth in the regular-season standings.  Wesley would clinch at least third place, and possibly second (pending the result of the Mary Washington/Villa Julie game), with a win over St. Mary's.  If the Seahawks upend the Wolverines, it would create at least a two-way tie between the two teams, and possibly a three-way tie for third place if Hood finishes with a win over Salisbury.

In a three-way tie between Hood, St. Mary's and Wesley, the Blazers would gain the third seed because of head-to-head competition among the three tied teams, followed by the Seahawks and Wolverines.

Tip off of the women's game at Wentworth Gymnasium on Saturday is at 2:00 PM, with the men's game following at 4:00 PM.

No. 6 Mary Washington Too Much for Wesley - Feb 21, 2008

DOVER, Del. - Despite jumping out to an early five point lead, the Wesley College Women's basketball team fell to powerful Mary Washington 74-46 behind 23 points from the Eagles 6-3 center Liz Hickey. Hickey also had five blocks in the game which gave her the NCAA Division III career lead in blocks with 487 in her career.

Wesley (12-12, 8-7 CAC) lost the lead for good at 14:22 of the first half on a jumper by the Eagle's Lisa Tracey. Mary Washington (22-2, 14-1 CAC) built their lead to 16 as Wesley went scoreless for just over 7 minutes in the half.

Up as much as 20 in the first half, Mary Washington held a 14 point lead at buzzer. Leading the Wolverines was reserve Ashley Barker who hit two three pointers. Corey Boyd followed with five first half points.

In the second half it was more Mary Washinton as Wesley's shooting hit the skids. Wesley shot just 27 percent from the floor in the second half including a paltry 1-10 from behind the arc.

Hickey broke the old mark of 485, held by another player from the CAC, former Marymount standout Cori Carson (1997).

Wesley's Corey Boyd continued to battle, netting seven second half points to finish with a dozen and added five assists and three boards. Wolverine forward Herbie Rayne contributed eight points in the loss.

Wesley next home game is Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m. when they host St. Mary's (Md.).

Team Effort Leads Wolverines Past Blazers - Feb 18, 2008

FREDERICK, Md. - Cory Boyd, Colleen Thomas and Michele Mules led the offense, while Herbie Rayne and Angie Owens stood out on defense as Wesley College picked up a 72-64 win at Hood in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action.

Boyd had her second consecutive 10-assist game and added 15 points for her second career double-double.  The freshman guard hit 5-of-10 from the floor, including three threes.  Thomas shot 9-of-15 from the floor for a team-high 19 points and dished out a season-high five assists.  Mules added 15 points.

On the defensive end, Rayne grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and tied a team season-high with six steals.  Owens blocked six shots, twice as many as the previous team season-best.

The Wolverines (12-11, 8-6 CAC) went on a 13-2 run that ended with back-to-back threes by Mules and gave Wesley a  27-12 lead with 10:14 left in the half.  Hood (4-18, 2-12 CAC) chipped away at the lead over the final 10 minutes, however, and trailed by just 34-31 at the half.

In the second half, Wesley's lead climbed back to 10, 52-42, before nine straight Blazer points slashed the deficit to just a single point with 7:26 to go.  A three-point play by Mules ended the run and the Wolverines hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to end any chance of a Hood comeback.

Jenn Willison had 21 points and 17 rebounds for the Blazers, but shot just 6-of-20 from the floor.

Boyd and Mules had three steals apiece as the Wolverines forced Hood into 24 turnovers, while committing just 11 of their own.

Wesley returns home to host No. 4 Mary Washington on Wednesday, February 20 at 6:00 PM.

Wolverines Fall at York (Pa.) - Feb 16, 2008

YORK, Pa. - Wesley's Colleen Thomas and Angie Owens scored 16 points apiece and Cory Boyd had her third 10-assist game of the year, but it was not enough as a hot-shooting York (Pa.) team notched a lopsided 92-55 win over the Wolverines in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play.

The Spartans (16-7, 8-6 CAC) hit 13-of-21 threes in the game, including 8-of-10 in the second half, to propel a 55 percent effort as a team from the floor.

Amanda Andrews powered York's long range attack, hitting 7-of-10 from beyond the arc, on her way to 25 points.

The Wolverines (11-11, 7-6 CAC) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead behind five of Thomas' 12 first half points.  After another field goal by Thomas gave Wesley a 22-19 lead with 10:03 left in the half, the Spartans would outscore the Wolverines 25-8 over the remainder of the first half and took a 44-30 lead into the intermission.

The York run lasted another six minutes into the second half and stretched all the way to 48-14, before Michele Mules' lone field goal of the contest made it a 63-39 game with 14:01 to play.  The Wolverines, however, would not get closer than 23 the rest of the afternoon.

Keli Ward dished out a game-high 11 assists and added 15 points for the double-double.  Kristen Daly added 16 points and nine rebounds.  Chanel Perez and April Sparkman added 11 apiece.

The game was the first of an eight-day, four-game stretch for Wesley.  The Wolverines travel to Hood on Monday, February 18, before hosting Mary Washington on February 20 and St.. Mary's (Md.) on February 23.

Hood Game Moved to Monday, February 18 - Feb 13, 2008

DOVER, Del. - Due to inclement weather in the Frederick, Maryland area, the Capital Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader between Wesley College and Hood College on Tuesday, February 14 has been postponed and will now be played on Monday, February 18.  Game times will still be 6:00 PM for the women's game, with the men's contest following at 8:00 PM.

The games were originally slated for Wednesday, February 13, but were moved up one day due to scheduling conflicts at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, the home site for Hood men's and women's basketball.  Inclement weather then forced the move to February 14.

Scorching Second Half Leads to Victory - Feb 09, 2008

The Wesley College women's basketball team defeated the visiting Salisbury University Seagulls 76-68 by shooting 64 percent from the field in the second half including 7-of-8 from behind the arc.

Michele Mules was also lights out in the second half. After going 0-for-2 in the first half, Mules hit 5-of-7 in the second half, to finish with a game and season high 23 points. Thomas finished just behind her with 21 points as Wesley pulled away for the eight point victory.

It was a tale of two halves for the Wesley (11-10, 7-5 CAC) who fell behind early in the first half as Salisbury (8-13, 5-7 CAC) scored 14 points off 11 Wesley turnovers. The Sea Gull's Monica Merkel and Shaniece Roseborough led Salisbury with 15 and 12 points respectively.

Wesley created 11 Salisbury turnovers, but shot only 27 percent in the half. Wesley's season leading scorer, Colleen Thomas, paced the Wolverines with nine points in the first half. For the Wolverines, being down by 16 at the half was just a set up for their dramatic 2nd half comeback.

As much shooting trouble as Wesley had in the first half, they had an equal amount of succes in the second. The Wolverines shot an amazing 64 percent from the field including 88 percent from three point territory. Thomas added two more threes in the half to help the Wolverines inch back and finally take the lead at the 6:15 mark.

The Sea Gulls on the other hand only shot 27 percent in the second half and only hit one three pointer. Monica Merkel led the Sea Gulls with 12 points with Roseborough adding 15.

Wesley hits the road for two games next week, then returns on February 20th for a home tilt with Mary Washington University at 6:00 p.m.

Basketball Doubleheader at Hood Moved - Feb 08, 2008

FREDERICK, Md. - The Capital Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader between Hood College and Wesley College originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13, has been moved to Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 6 and 8 p.m. at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.

Wesley Falls to Powerful Marymount Squad - Feb 06, 2008

The Wesley College Women's basketball team fell to the visiting Marymount University Saints in CAC action 51-34 at Wentworth Gymnasium.  The Marymount victory was the 500th career win for Saint's coach Bill Finney.

Colleen Thomas led Wesley with 17 points and pulled in 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

The game was a defensive struggle the entire way, as the teams combined to shoot just 13-of-63 in the first half, and only 32-of-122 in the game.

The Wolverine defense held Marymount to its second lowest point total of the season in the game, but could not overcome a Saint defense that was up to the task.

Wesley (10-10, 6-5 CAC) traded leads in the first half, although shooting only 18 percent from the floor. Thomas was lights out in the half with 12 of Wesley's 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting with two from the charity stripe for the CAC leader in free throw percentage.  For the Saints, Kathleen Brown had seven points, to lead Marymount to a 21-16 halftime lead.

The Wolverines were agressive on the boards in the opening 20 minutes, outrebounding the Saints 29-24, including 11 offensive boards that resulted in eight second chance points.

In the second half, the Saints (18-2, 10-1 CAC) applied full court pressure, causing 23 Wolverine turnovers in the contest.

Angie Owens grabbed 10 rebounds for Wesley.

The Saints were led by Brown and Heather Leahy who put in 10 a piece to help Marymount pull away for the victory.

The Wolverines host Salisbury University on Saturday, February 9, with a 2:00 p.m. tip off.

Wolverines Thump Lancaster Bible, 84-50 - Feb 04, 2008

LANCASTER, Pa. - Ball control was the theme of evening in Wesley's 84-50 non-conference win over Lancaster Bible.  The Wolverines committed a season-low five turnovers, while forcing a season-high 39.

Wesley put the game away in the first half, outscoring the Chargers 44-8 over the final 15:29.

Colleen Thomas led Wesley (10-9) to its tenth win of the season with a season-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 3-for-4 from three-point range.  The sophomore also added five rebounds and three steals.

Cory Boyd posted her second straight game with double-figure assists, aiding on 10 Wolverine baskets.  The Capital Athletic Conference assist leader also notched six steals in the contest.

Angie Owens added 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting and Stephanie Bailey came off the bench for 11 points.  Meredith Demetor had career-highs with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Chargers (4-14) jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, powered by six points by each Meredith Wrightson and Nicole Karschner.  Wesley erased the lead with a back-breaking 20-2 run over the next 7:19 to take a 27-16 lead.  After the two teams traded baskets, the score stood at 33-20 in favor of Wesley before the Wolverines ran off 22 straight points.  A Wrightson lay in with nine seconds left in the half ended a 5:30 scoreless drought for Lancaster Bible.

Karschner scored 16 to lead the Chargers.  Wrightson turned in a dubious triple-double.  In addition to her 14 points and 13 rebounds, the forward was also forced into 11 turnovers by the Wesley defense.

Wesley totaled 22 steals in the contest.  In addition to six by Boyd and three by Thomas, Patricia Millner and Bailey had three apiece and eight different players had at least one steal.

The win completed Wesley's non-conference schedule.  The Wolverines return to CAC action with a 6:00 PM tip off against Marymount on Wednesday, February 6.

Wolverines Pull to .500 - Feb 02, 2008

STEVENSON, Md. - Stephanie Bailey calmly sank four free throws in the final 11 seconds as Wesley College held on for a 63-56 win at Villa Julie in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) contest.

Wesley (9-9, 6-4 CAC) had led by as many as 17 after a Michele Mules jumper with 13:03 to play made it 45-28 in favor of the Wolverines.  The Mustangs (6-14, 3-8), however, whittled the lead down to just three after a lay up by Tanisha Foster with 16 seconds left, 59-56.  Bailey, who had missed her only previous free throw attempt in the game, was fouled with 11 seconds to go and stretched the lead to five, making both free throws.  Cory Boyd picked up a quick steal and Bailey was fouled again.  The freshman proceeded to seal the win with two more points.

Foster led all players with 25 points and 16 rebounds.  While the Villa Julie forward hit 11-of-16 field goals, Wesley locked down the rest of the Mustangs.  The Wolverine defense limited the rest of the team to just 11-of-49 shooting (22 percent).

Wesley was paced by Angie Owens.  The freshman forward scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals in the game.  Colleen Thomas added 12 points and five of her seven rebounds came off the offensive glass.

Boyd dished out a game-high seven assists.

With the win, Wesley pulled its record to an even 9-9.  More importantly, the Wolverines now stand at 6-4 in the CAC, half a game behind York (Pa.) for third and a half game ahead of fifth place St. Mary's (Md.)

The win also gave Wesley a season sweep against the Mustangs.

The Wolverines play their final non-conference contest when they travel to Lancaster Bible on Monday, February 4 for a 7:00 PM tip off.

Wesley Wins Big - Jan 31, 2008

Dover, Del. - The Wesley (8-9, 5-4 CAC) women's basketball team stopped a three game skid with an 82-52 Capital Athletic Conference win again traveling Gallaudet University (2-13, 0-10 CAC).  Their 8th win of the season eclipses last year's total of 7 wins.

Wesley jumped out to a 10 point first half lead as Colleen Thomas paced the Wolverines with 11 points in the opening 20.  Latasha Torres shot hit three of her four threes in the period for nine points.  The Bison were powered by Nukeitra Hayes who was 6-for-11 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Wolverines pulled away in the second half outscoring  the Bison 45-25. Thomas continued to lead the Wolverines finishing with 17 points and six rebounds.  Michelle Mules drained four triples on her way to 14 points.  Cory Boyd dished out 10 assists and grabbed five steals.

For the Bison, Hayes led all scorers with 26 points and pulled down 19 rebounds.  Brittainy Payne added 14 points.

The Wolverines travel to Villa Julie on Saturday, February 2 for a 2 p.m. tip-off.

Wolverines Drop Third Straight - Jan 23, 2008

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - St. Mary's (Md.) Kiely Murphy was on fire from beyond the arc, hitting 7-of-11 three pointers, as Wesley dropped a 73-58 final in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action.
