Wesley Falls in Final Seconds
DOVER, Del. - A goal by Elisabeth Hildebrand
with four seconds left broke a 17-17 tie and handed Wesley an 18-17
defeat to Frostburg State in non-conference action.
The goal overshadowed an a school record eight-goal effort by
Stephanie Johnson.
The two teams traded goals in the early going and an Amanda
Browning goal assisted by Jade Martin tied things with 15:01 left
in the first half. Carly Rihard scored the second of her seven
goals at 14:09, however, to start a 5-1 run that ended when Johnson
found the back of the net with a minute to play in the half as
Wesley (5-8) trailed 8-6 at the intermission.
Johnson scored again at 29:03 of the second half, but three
Frostburg (6-7) goals stretched the Bobcat lead to 11-7. Browning
started and finished a four goal run that tied the game with 19:57
to play, but Frostburg quickly extended the lead back to three,
15-12 after a Hildebrand score with 12:12 to go.
Wesley mounted a furious comeback, scoring five times in the final
3:35 to tie the game at 17-17 with 32 seconds left after a goal by
Brooke Bennett.
Hildebrand was fouled on the final possession with four seconds
left and converted a free position shot for the win.
In addition to Johnson's eight goals and an assist, Martin added
four goals and a helper. Browning filled up the stat sheet with two
goals, three assists, eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Bennett caused five turnovers.
Rihard scored a team high seven goals and Hildebrand finished with
five goals and three assists.
Erin Morrell made seven saves for the Bobcats. Farryn Kauffman
stopped nine shots in goal for Wesley.
The Wolverines are back in action on Monday, Aprl 14 when they
travel to Moravian for a non-conference contest.
