Widener Downs Wesley
DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Samantha Hannibal (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) scored twice in the first half, but Widener found the back of the net twice in the second half for a 3-2 win in women's soccer.
Hannibal scored less than four minutes in to give the Wolverines (4-7) an early 1-0 lead. After the Pride (10-1-1) tied it up in the 10th minute on a goal by Brittany Balentine, it was Hannibal with her second tally, this one midway through the 25th minute, to put Wesley ahead 2-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, Sam Baer was involved in both Widener scores. She tied things up with an assist from Casey LeRoy in the 59th minute, then assisted on Devan Doyle's game-winner at 77:42.
Sydney Kahan (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) stopped six shots for the Wolverines.
Alee Gunter and Vanessa Hejnas split time for Widener. Gunter made one save in the first half.
While it was Wesley's seventh loss of 2009, all have come against top competition. The seven teams to beat the Wolverines are a combined 54-18-8, including Widener, who is currently ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Wolverines return to Capital Athletic Conference action on Friday, October 9 when Hood visits Scott D. Miller Stadium.
