ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Wesley College volleyball team ended its 2011 season with four matches at the Seahawk Invitational at St. Mary's (Md.).
The Wolverines opened the tournament with a four set loss to Muhlenberg. The teams split the first two sets, including a 25-22 win by the Wolverines in the second set, but the Mules won the sets three and four to put the match away.
Kristen Roberts (Loveland, Colo./Middletown (Del.)) paced Wesley with 13 kills and hit .478 in the match. Carle Ax (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) had nine kills and hit .471 to go along with two blocks. Cristina Marruffo (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington) dished out 26 assists. Jessica Taylor (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) had four aces and two blocks, while Alysha Brannan (Portland, Ore./Tigard) matched her in the blocks column. Ashley Pierce (Sudlersville, Md./Queen Anne's County) led the team with 13 digs.
In the next match at the tournament, Lynchburg picked up a 3-0 win over the Wolverines, 25-13, 25-12, 25-11. Ax had four kills in the match, while Marruffo added nine assists. Pierce added six digs and two aces.
St. Mary's (Md.) then swept Wesley in a CAC match, 25-16, 25-12, 25-15. Ax led the Wolverines with seven kills, 17 digs and two blocks. Marruffo had 16 assists and nine digs, while Taylor added a pair of aces.
The final match of the tournament resulted in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 final in favor of Bridgewater (Va.). Taylor had 10 kills in the match. Marruffo added 15 assists, while Pierce was credited with 10 digs.
