DOVER, Del. – Wesley College Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and head baseball coach Bret Underwood was recently announced as an inductee in the Delaware State University Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
Underwood was a four-year starter for the Hornets at first base. One of the most prolific hitters in school history and was named first-team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in his three final seasons. He still holds the Hornets career record for hits (272), while ranking in the top three in home runs (50), runs batted in (224), runs scored (185), and extra-base hits (107) while hitting .354. As a sophomore, he finished 19th in Division I with 77 RBIs, which is also a school record.
After completing his senior year at Delaware State in 2004, he signed a free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox.
Underwood is entering his eighth season as the head coach for the Wesley baseball team. His teams have qualified for the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) six times. He has coached two All-Americans, seven All-Region players and 18 All-CAC selections.
"It is a great honor to be inducted into the DSU Athletics Hall of Fame," said Underwood. "I would like to thank the Hall of Fame committee, my coaches and teammates that were there during my four years at DSU. I had a great experience there and wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for my time at Del State."
The ceremony is set for Friday, Nov. 16 at DSU's campus. He will be recognized with the rest of the Class of 2018 at halftime of the Hornets' season finale against Virginia-Lynchburg on Saturday.
