FREDERICA, Del. – The Wesley College men's lacrosse team were upended, 9-4 by the Bridgewater (Va.) Eagles on Wednesday.
The game was originally set to be played on campus at Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium, but winter weather forced a location change. Thanks to the partnership between Wesley College and the DE Turf Complex, the game was moved to the stadium at DE Turf.
Wesley stretched their lead to 3-1 in the early part of the third quarter when Carlin Fernandez' pass ended up in the back of the net.
Bridgewater got out on a 4-0 scoring run in the middle part of the third to take the 4-3 lead on Wesley. Wesley nodded the game up at four in the waning moments of the third quarter when Adam Tewey found Smith open on the wing and sniped a shot past the Bridgewater goalie.
Unfortunately, Bridgewater finished the game on a 5-0 run to steal the victory from Wesley.
Joe Fingles, Will Fingles, Carlin Fernandez and Chris Smith all scored for Wesley in the loss. The defensive effort was led by Ben Mitzel and Nolan Vesey. Mitzel scooped a team-high five ground balls and added four caused turnovers. Vesey caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
James Cella stopped nine shots in net for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Saturday when they host the Methodist Monarchs. Opening faceoff from Drass Field is set for 1 p.m.
