OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Strong, stifling defense and a golden goal in double overtime by Danny Garza propels the Wesley College men's soccer team to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Pod Four Final with a 1-0 victory over the Penn St.-Harrisburg Lions in the first round of the ECAC Tournament.
The Wolverines and the Lions battled back-and-forth throughout regulation with both teams having quality chances. Luis Cruz had a chance on net in the 15th minute but Nick Guglielmetti just got a hand on it and pushed the ball just past the far post.
The Lions turned up the pressure on the Wolverines in the second half but the best scoring defense in the Atlantic East held strong and forced overtime.
After the first overtime went by with both teams not registering a shot, Wesley turned on the counter attack after a Lion turnover in the second overtime. A tackle by Dina out wide gave Wesley the ball in the midfield. Nicholas Roop out wide corralled the ball and looked to get a cross in the box. The cross into the box was knocked down by the Lion defense but not controlled. Garza was able to control the ball in the box and took a left-footed rip to the upper corner of the goal and past the outstretched arms of the Lion keeper to give Wesley the win.
Wesley had a 16-9 advantage in shots and did not allow a Penn St.-Harrisburg corner until the second half.
Kyle Springsteen made four saves in net to register his 11th win of the season and seventh clean sheet of the season.
Wesley set a new program record season win total with 15 victories, besting the previous mark 14 set in the 2004 and 2006 seasons.
Wesley (15-4-1) will have a quick turnaround as they take on the host Stevenson Mustangs in the ECAC Pod Four final on Saturday at 6 p.m.
