DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball team dropped their 2019 season opener to the Swarthmore Garnet, 10-2 in a rainy and cold DuPont Field on Saturday.
Swarthmore got three runs in the first before Wesley responded in the bottom of the third. Abbey Mayse led off the inning with a single to shortstop. Alexis Howerin came in to pinch run for Mayse and came around to score after stealing second base and advancing two bases on wild pitches.
Swarthmore got their run back in the top of the fourth and added two in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead heading to the bottom half of the sixth. Ashley Royer started Wesley's half of the sixth in a big way by cracking the first home run of the season over the left-center field fence. The Garnet added four insurance runs in the seventh to help take the victory.
Jessica Anderson struck out four in six innings of work. She gave up eighth hits and six runs (three unearned).
The second game of the doubleheader between Swarthmore and Wesley was called at the end of the fourth inning due to rain and unplayable conditions.
Wesley will be back in action on Wednesday when they host the Washington Shorewomen in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
